Vilma Espín

June 20, 2007

Dear people of Cuba:

It was with profound sorrow that we learned of the death of beloved comrade Vilma Espín, who was an exemplary revolutionary not only for Cuba but for the world.

Her actions, from an early age, in the clandestine struggle against the Batista tyranny, her outstanding leadership in the continuous campaign for the advancement of women in society, and her total dedication to the Revolution were and always will be examples for us to follow.

At a time when the worldwide women’s movement was yet to be, Vilma, together with her sister comrades, opened the road in Cuba to assure women’s equality in all aspects. She showed that the advancement of women is closely linked to the development of socialism.

Among the luminous lights of the beacon that is the Cuban revolution, is the life of Vilma. We will always remember her firmness in the struggle; her grace and her love of justice for her people.

We extend our profound condolences and solidarity to comrade Raúl and family, to the Cuban people, and to her comrades in the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban Women’s Federation.
